| textures tutorial |
| First things first: You use this tutorial and its tools on your own risk! I'm not responsible of anything what might happen while you're reading this tutorial and using it's tools! Well - let's begin shall we? |
| In this tutorial we want to change the steering wheel texture of the SL73 (the closed version that is - it's raining so often in Switzerland that a cabriolet turns into a moving swimming pool). We need the following tools/things: Of course you can make your own texture. It's important that it is a tga file and has 16, 24 or 32 bits colour depth. It should not be compressed (ptx makes that itself). If possible it should not be bigger than 512x512 pixels. But perhaps it works - I don't know :) |
If you have everything let's start by extracting the SYN extractor into a proper location (your WR directory would be a good choice). As soon as you've done that you start the extractor with a doubleclick on 'WR_SYNex.exe'. Choose the cockpit archive of the SL73 with the 'browse-button' (the picture shows where you'll find it). |
After that you should extract the files. Extract them into the same folder where the textures.syn was (Krom's extractor does this automaticly). So we just have to right-click on one of the files and choose 'export all'. We could just export 'lenkrad.ptx' but we take everything for now :) |
It is important, that you move the textures.syn, that's still in the \SL73\cpit\textures-folder, into a save place (read: don't just delete it!). It has to vanish from the folder - so move it somewhere save. If you delete it you won't be able to recover the original texture. After we've moved it out of the folder we can proceed with the last step: converting the tga into a ptx-file. Wenn wir sie aus dem Verzeichnis geschafft haben, kann der letzte Schritt beginnen - das konvertieren der TGA in eine ptx-Datei |
Now extract the MakePTX programm to a appropriate folder (i.e. where your TGA file is). Then, start a command line - i.e. command (In Windows: 'start-run-command'). Change to the folder, where you have your MakePTX and input the following: makeptx -i *.tga Wobei der Stern den Namen der Datei darstellt - idealerweise wäre das lenkrad.tga. Nach ein paar Sekunden sollte das Programm fertig sein (dauert u.U. ein bisschen). If your file has a different name (i.e. moos.tga) you can input the following: makeptx -i moos.tga -o lenkrad.ptx
Now we have to rename the file into 'lenkrad.ptx' (if we haven't done that already) and copy it into the folder, where we've extracted the textures.syn in the first place (the cockpit folder of the SL73). There will be a dialogue which asks you if you want to overwrite the existing file: choose 'yes'. If you start World Racing now and choose the SL73 (the closed version!) you will have a mighty moss steering wheel in your hands (or whatever you've chosen as a texture). It looks silly of course, but it is just a tutorial. It's up to you to make something far more interesting.
If you want the old texture back, delete all the ptx-files of the directory where you've extracted the textures.syn. After that copy your textures.syn into that folder (you made a copy of it, right?). That is all - of course there are more possibilities and perhaps some day there will be a car- und trackeditor :)
